The Craft Lodge of Freemasons, the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, the Council of Cryptic Masons, and the Commandery of Knights Templar together form the York Rite of Freemasonry. Each of these bodies receives its members from the Craft Lodges.
Orient Chapter No. 102, Royal Arch Masons, received its charter on May 3, 1883. Shekinah Council No. 24, Royal and Select Masters, was chartered on April 27, 1892, while Oriental Commandery No. 35, Knights Templar, was established on May 3, 1881.
All three organizations have been in continuous operation since their inception. Our current meeting place at 903 Harrison Street is not the original venue, as the previous building tragically burned down. However, we are proud to be one of the original tenants and funders of the Kansas City Masonic Temple, which was erected in 1911.
In the early days of the 903 Harrison York Rite Masons, our membership included a veritable who's who of Kansas City's prominent citizens. Notable figures like William F. Kuhn and Harry S. Truman were affiliated with some or all of our organizations. With a thriving membership of over 2,000 in the early 1900s, we were home to politicians, civic leaders, business owners, as well as policemen, firemen, postal workers, and entertainers—all working towards the common goal of bettering themselves and the communities they lived and worked in.
The building at 903 Harrison Street, now recognized as the Historic Kansas City Masonic Temple, was the go-to place for social functions in the early twentieth century.
The York Rite of Freemasonry serves as a direct continuation of the Blue Lodge, or Craft Lodge, within Freemasonry history, guiding men through their personal growth. This journey can often lead individuals to the Kansas City Masonic Temple, where York Rite Masons further their development.
Freemasonry has a rich history that fosters an environment where men can come together at places like the Kansas City Masonic Temple, regardless of race, color, creed, or nationality. This inclusivity is a core value shared by York Rite Masons and reflects the organization's commitment to harmony and brotherhood.
Freemasonry, with its rich history, promotes love of country and encourages each member, including those at the Kansas City Masonic Temple and York Rite Masons, to be active in their communities.
